The Problem With Being an Older Blogger
A Beetle that's seen better days...

I’m 60 years-old. I’ve got lots of experiences to refer back to.

For example…

Back in the 80s, I worked with a guy who had a habit of repeating himself.

He’d tell the same story every few months, as if it was brand new.

One day, someone called him out on it.

“You told us this before.”

His response was simple: “Yes, but you weren’t listening properly the first time.”

Now, that was just an excuse for a bad memory.

But there’s something in it.

Because when you write a blog, you pull from experience.

And if you’ve been around a while, that experience stretches back decades.

But here’s the problem.

You write about something that happened in 1996.

And people assume you mean last week.

You talk about working with a difficult client, and someone in the comments asks, “Are you okay? Sounds like a nightmare.”

You write about a time you struggled with motivation, and someone tells you to “stay strong.”

They think you’re writing in real time.

But you’re not.

You’re writing from a long history of things that stuck with you.

And let’s be honest—stories from 20 years ago are often more interesting than what happened yesterday.

The problem is, people read in the present.
They assume everything is happening now.

That’s the internet.
Instant consumption. Instant reactions.

But experience isn’t instant.
It accumulates.

And if you’re an older blogger, that’s both your strength and your curse.

Because you’re carrying years of stories. And people are hearing them as if they just happened.

So, what do you do? You either spend time clarifying: This was years ago…
Or you let people misunderstand.
And maybe, just maybe, it doesn’t matter.

Because if the story lands, and the message sticks, who cares if they get the timeline wrong?

What matters is whether they were listening properly this time.

I've written this in response to some people wanting me to post links to things from years ago.

Because they think I might be making it up.

I'm not. I write real stories from my long experience.
It's what happens when you get older. As I said, it's a strength and a curse.
